About this work

Description

Identical twin brothers, Neil and Adam, have the same gene mutation, neurofibromatosis type 1 (Nf1), which has had very different effects on their lives. Adam has growths across the nerves of his face leading to gross facial disfigurement. In contrast, Neil suffers from short term memory loss and epilepsy. The brothers are keen to try to work out why the gene mutation has led to such different outcomes. The brothers travel to Belgium to have full body scans to see if they have any internal tumours caused by the neurofibromatosis. Adam travels to Hanoi where Agent Orange has been suspected to cause gene mutations in the population there. He later investigates a drug being trialled that is shrinking tumours in Nf1 patients in the US but is not currently available.
