    that I have indicated above, I still hoped to glean, in this field of inquiry, some fi-esli facts which might serve as stepping-stones for the further progress of those who might follow me. The main object of my researches was, however, to find remedies that would at least mitigate the force of the disease, and, if possible, some means of prevention. Of the amount of success I have had the reader will be able to judge.
