About this work

Description

The man seated on a round stool on the left holds a pair of pincers containing a tooth. It replaces the knife held by the equivalent man in the painting on which the present painting is based. The man seated opposite holds a hat, while in the original version he prepares to draw a sword from its sheath

Adaptation of part of a painting of peasants brawling, by or attributed to Adriaen Brouwer in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich. It was reproduced in the 19th century in two prints showing the composition in the same direction as the present painting (Scholz, op. cit., nos. 224 and 259)
