About this work

Description

This fascinating documentary by Emeka Onono looks at the psychological condition, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). BDD affects 1 in 100 people and leads them to think they are grotesquely ugly or disfigured. They frequently become housebound and live like recluses. We follow 24-year-old Kayla who is about to undergo surgery to her nose for the 8th time, leaving her father with over £60 000 of debt, and running the risk of her nose collapsing or splitting during the process. We also meet 34-year-old Joleyn who lives behind sun glasses, has never had a job and has no friends. And Ruth who isn't a reculse but has a partner and a job but hides behind heavy make-up and hair and believes she looks like a man. Rob Willson, a cognitive behavioural psychologist attempts to get Ruth and Joleyn to change the focus of their anxiety but Kayla refuses to try CBT. This programme provides a valuable insight into a condition not often spoken about.
