Biographical note
The more I have space to listen and share with my peers, the more I believe in our shared wisdom. It’s from my peers that I’ve learned to clearly recognise my own experience and to believe in something other than the shallow narratives written ‘about us’. Peer to peer spaces have shown me new possibilities – for envisioning who I am or what I can be – they have given me strength. (Jet Moon)
You Are Here (2023-2024) was a series of workshops, a survivor writer’s group, and interviews with various survivor writers. YAH built on Jet’s first survivor writer platform: Playing With Fire, which took place in 2021. A core aspect of the work was Jet’s experience as a survivor; their longing for survivor-led spaces, and strong belief in peer to peer sharing and knowledge.
Seeking to highlight survivor writing and experience, both YAH and PWF used an open definition of survivorship, including but not limited to survival of sexual violence. Mentioned in the call were those who have experienced homophobia, racism, transphobia or ableism. The project issued an invitation to people who had experienced trauma, who were writing, and wished to connect with other survivors.
There was no instruction to write specifically about survivorship. All writing forms were included: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, blogs, monologues, performance texts, critical writing, writing which incorporated graphics.
The interviews which are part of YAH were conducted by Jet with writers in their network, some of them Playing With Fire alumni. These writers speak about their development, process, cultural surroundings, struggles and determination as writers. Playwrights, film makers, novelists, poets, academics, researchers, editors, organisers and activists; share their outlook on how and why they write.
Playing With Fire was produced in collaboration with LADA: Live Art Development Agency and Spread The Word, and funded by Arts Council England. You Are Here was funded by Arts Council England and produced in collaboration with Spread The Word and Wellcome Collection.
