Coliform bacilli Nil 180 + 1 6 3 Nil 1 Nil Bact. coli (type l) Nil 180 + 1 Nil Nil Nil Nil Nil Total - 8 samples taken DRAINAG-E AND SEWERAGE (a) Works completed or carried out during the year or new works contemplated: The development of the Westacres housing estate, Stalbridge is causing encroachment close to the sewage works, and since the Council’s Consulting Engineers are investigating the necessity of enlarging the existing works, the opportunity is being taken to see whether or not it would be better in the long run to find a new site for the works. The proximity of the developments which are now likely to take place could give rise to complaint of nuisance if the works remain on the present site. An experiment is to be tried out at one sewage works of planting aromatic trees which, it is hoped, will minimise the smell arising from sludge lagoons since the accumulation of sludge at most of the works is a problem still unsolved. (b) Established nuisances calling for more adequate sewerage arrangements by the District Council Arrangements have been made for the septic tanks serving the Airey houses at Moorside, Marnhull, to be connected by means of a pumping main to the sewage disposal works serving the Swedish houses nearby. (c) There has been no alteration in the scheme for emptying cesspools during the year, but the new contractors, who started in September, 19&9, have continued to work satisfactorily. The Council’s old refuse tip at Fifehead Neville is still available as a disposal site. PUBLIC CLEANSING (a) The collection of refuse is on a fortnightly basis throughout the District and special collections of household refuse are made when a lorry is available.. The Council has one 20 cu.yd. Pakamatic vehicle and one 12 cu.yd. side loader, which is to be replaced during 1971 by an Eagle Compressload 5 vehicle.
