    MEDICAL ORaANISATIONS OF lOREIGN ARMIES. AMEEICA. The medical corps of the array has, by recent Con- gressional Act, been increased from 192 to 321 medical officers, viz. :— 1 surgeon - general (with rank of brigadier- general). 8 assistant surgeons - general (with rank of colonel). 12 deputy surgeons-general (with rank of lieur tenant-colonel). 60 surgeons (with rank of major). 240 assistant surgeons (with rank of 1st lieutenant, mounted, for the first five years, and the rank ■of captain, mounted, thereafter until promoted ±0 major). Pay and Emoluments. An assistant surgeon, with the rank of 1st lieu- tenant, mounted, receives $1,600 per annum, or ^133.33 monthly. At the end of five years he is promoted to captain and receives $2,000 a year, which, with the increase of 10 per cent, for five years' service, is $2,200, or $183.33 per month.
