About this work

Description

Examines an outstandingly successful example of community care for the mentally ill in the Belgian market town of Gheel. The town keeps up its centuries-old tradition of care and hospitality, first extended to pilgrims in medieval times who visited the towns shrine of St. Dymphna, patron saint of the mentally disturbed or deficient. Present day patients are integrated into the caring family by joining in the farm work, and the carers are supported by visiting health workers and by access to clinic facilities for the patients.
