    PREFACE As I am quite unknown beyond the con- fines of a limited circle, I feel some diffidence in publishing these Essays, most of which contain theory and practice different from what obtains in the pro- fession. But as scarcely a day passes without giving an illustration of the truth of some statement contained therein, and since I have been encouraged by the cautious approval of two gentlemen of repute in Ophthalmology, I venture to bring these Essays before the profession, in the sure hope that they may be fairly considered and fairly judged.
