Biographical note

Johann Friedrich Gronovius (1690-1760), physician and naturalist; studied at Leyden where he took the degree of MD. and practised as a physician; he was distinguished as a naturalist and founded a museum, part of which, relating to botany, was purchased by Sir Joseph Banks.

Sir Howard Grubb (1844-1931), Kt., cr. 1887; DL City of Dublin; FRS; FRAS; optical designer and astronomical instrument maker, head of the Grubb Telescope Company, established by his father Thomas; scientific adviser to the Commissioners of Irish Lights since 1913; contractor to British, Colonial and foreign governments; invented the reflector or "reflex" sight.

Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford (1766-1827), politician and British colonial administrator; son of Prime Minister Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford; represented Banbury in Parliament from 1792 to 1794; served as first British Governor of Ceylon from 1798 to 1805.

Dr James Manby Gully (1808-1883), hydrotherapist; founded a successful 'hydropathy' clinic in Malvern, Worcestershire, which had many notable Victorians as clients, and whose success was partly responsible for Malvern's rapid development from village into a large town.

Robert Marcus Gunn (1850-1909), FRCS 1882; ophthalmologist; surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital; President of the Section of Ophthalmology of the British Medical Association, 1906.

At the Surrey Institution he anticipated the principle of electric telegraph; invented exy-hydrogen-blow-pipe and discovered the Drummond Light and is also know for steam engines..

Henry Guy (1631-1710) Politician, M.A Christ Church Ocford 1663, M.P Hedon (Yorkshire) 1670-95 and 1702-5, where he erected a town hall , 1693 boon companion of Charles II: secretary to the treasury, 1679-88 and 1691-5; sent to the Tower for receiving a bribe; left money to William Pulteney [q.v.].

Dr William Augustus Guy (1810-1885) Medical Statistician, educated at Christ's Hospital and Guy's Hospital; studies at Heidelberg and Paris, M.B. Cantab., 1837; professor of forensic medicine at Kings College Hospital London 1838; asistant physician at King's College Hospital 1842; Dean of the Faculty of Medicine 1846-58; President of the Statistical Society 1873-5; Vice-President of the Royal Society 1876-7, Croonian (1861) Luleian (1868) and Harveian (1875) lecturer at College of Physicians.

Sir William Robert Grove (1811-1896). Judge and physical scientist.

Johann Jakob Guggenbühl (1816-1863). Swiss physician and pioneer of modern disability assistance. Founder of the Abendberg school.
