La smorza, or the Blowing out of the lights (French, "Souffler les lumières"), in the Corso in Rome, before midnight on the evening of Shrove Tuesday, the last day of carnival. Some people carry giant candle-snuffers with which to snuff out all the candles carried in the last days of the carnival
