About this work

Description

Red blood cells from a person with sickle cell anaemia. Under conditions of low oxygen the red blood cells can form these distinctive distorted shapes. These deformed red blood cells can block small blood vessels preventing oxygen from reaching the tissues. For an oxygenated, non-sickled comparison see N0024944.
