The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "Venie Clements embraces Bert Edwards. She was a comedian and singer who performed baby acts among other turns. 'Miss Venie Clements' and Mr. Bert Edwards are shown performing an Apache dance. However, she appears to be dressed as some kind of gypsy dancer, and he as (possibly) a gaucho. La danse des Apaches was the title of a French film produced in 1904, but this photograph has nothing to do with that Danse des Apaches which was popularised in the Paris of 1908 when the young Mistinguett and Max Dearly acted out the torrid and violent romance of a street-tough ('Apache') and his moll. A curious and enigmatic image; "I am still not entirely convinced that 'Miss Clements' is not actually a man!"."
