    only to count the number of stamens to ascertain their class, and the number of pistils to ascertain their order in the Linnaean system. A few irregularities, however, sometimes occur in these numbers, which may for a time perplex the beginner : nature will not bend either to this or to any other system. When these prelimi- naries are understood, the beginner will be prepared to comprehend the interrogatory key to the system con- trived by M. Lamouroux, a celebrated French botanist, which 1 have given in the Alphabet of Botany, but shall repeat here for the benefit of those who do not possess the book ; for though I would recommend the study of that little work also, I wish to render the present work as independent of it as possible.
