About this work
Description
Mathematician Marcus du Sautoy searches for the answers to one of science's greatest mysteries: how do we know who we are? Du Sautoy meets Vasu Reddy at Portsmouth University and learns, through the mirror-self recognition test and children aged 18-24 months old, at what age our self-awareness emerges. The test was invented by Gordon Gallup and originally used on animals, Gallup describes this. Adrian Owen works with patients in a vegetative state; his research is showing that many people thought to have no conscious awareness are actually aware despite being unable to move. Du Sautoy undergoes a cutting edge expeirment in anaesthesia and undergoes an out of body experience experiment. In Hollywood, he learns how celebrities are helping scientists understand the microscopic activities of our brain. Finally, he takes part in a mind-reading experiment that both helps explain and alters his understandig of who he is.
