About this work

Description

Records a ceiling painting by Pierre Mignard in the palace of Versailles. Left foreround, Venus has a cloak thrown round her by Vulcan; a cupid has a brazier, while another offers her a garland. Centre: Juno, Jupiter and Hebe (?). far right, Mars. Right background, a group including Time and Neptune. Other figures around the perimeter step over the border in a trompe l'oeil effect
