1 volume 76 ll. (of which 46 are blank). 8vo. 151/2 x 91/2 cm. Contemporary gilt stamped morocco binding, with repeated floreated ornament and initials 'P.C.' in the centre, slightly rubbed.

Biographical note

Peter Chamberlayne, the original owner of this Album, was the third physician of his name, and was educated at Merchant Taylors School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He took his M.D. Degree at Padua in 1619, and was afterwards incorporated both at Oxford and Cambridge. [see the Dictionary of National Biography].

Ownership note

The first two fly-leaves contain a holograph note on Chamberlayne and his work by Sir John Fenn [1739-1794), whose armorial book-plate with signature dated 1774, is pasted inside the upper cover. He writes, 'This Album containing various testimonies of Respect and Esteem in the Hand-writing of the Learned Ingenious Men of his Time towards Dr. Peter Chamberlayne, was given me by Richard Bull Esq., Member for Newport in Cornwall, a Great Collector of English Portraits. Feb'y. 1774.' Some added particulars are given by Arthur Howard Frere [1860-1931].
