    During the year 1,536 patients of whom 667 were soldiers, were received there, the average stay of each being 17*8 days. The higher prices paid for provisions and material used, and the nature of the cases under treatment caused an increase of 4s. 0’21d. in the cost of each patient per week, and the expenditure on each patient over the whole period of his residence there amounted to £2 17s. 8'22d. The total Ordinary Income of the Samaritan and Convalescent Home Fund amounted to £2,118 9s. 5d., a decrease of £292 9s. lid., which is attributable, in the main, to a reduction in the grants from the Dresden Assistance Fund and King Edward’s Hospital Fund. We have to acknowledge with grateful appreciation copies of The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail, The Daily Chronicle and Lloyd’s Weekly, which have been kindly provided for the patients by the respective proprietors. Our thanks are also due to Messrs. Schweppe, who supply gratuitously all the syphon soda-water required for the patients ; to Messrs. W. & G. Buszard for supplying confectionery to the refresh¬ ment bar in the Out-Patient Department ; and to many thoughtful friends who have, from time to time, forwarded gifts of game, poultry, vegetables and general farm produce. We are particularly anxious to record our appreciation of the generous assistance which we have received from the British Red Cross Society, who have sent us various gifts of articles of equipment, food and clothing for the use of the wounded soldiers under our care. We are also grateful to the Colonies for the valuable consignments of meat and provisions which they have forwarded to us for the same purpose through Government departments or independent committees, and to Messrs. W. and F. Faulkner, who have kept the soldiers regularly supplied with tobacco and cigarettes. The second Annual Meeting of the Ladies’ Work Society was held at the Hospital on June 11th, when the Society presented 1,000 garments to the Hospital. We are extremely grateful to the members of the Society for the valuable assistance they gave us by providing useful articles of clothing for the patients. We desire to record our deep regret at the death of Mr. Ernest Dresden, who, as a member of the Weekly Board, took a great interest in the Hospital’s work. Mr. Dresden bequeathed a legacy of £5,000 to the General Fund, a further proof of his solicitude for the charity which he had generously supported during his lifetime. We have also to deplore the death of Mr. Reginald Lucas, who had been associated with us in the management of the Hospital for eight years. Mr. Lucas was always in close touch with the adminis-
