My Loed Mayor, The high position you have attained by your professional ability as a Builder, together with the circumstance that you are the chief magistrate of the largest city in Em-ope, have induced me to address to you a few observations on the very import- ant subject of the ventilation and disinfection of the sewers. When we consider that the sewers of Lon- don, pervading as they do every part of the metro- polis, extend to some 1,500 miles, and that almost every house is more or less intimately connected with them, it is plain that their influence, in a sani- tary point of view, cannot readily be over-estimated.
