Illustration showing a Hog-nose snake (Anguis capite viperino) entwined around a Martagon lily (Lilium five, Martagon Canadense). The crown of the snake's head and back is brown with many large black spots, regularly placed; the hindmost parts of the body having transverse yellow bars between the black spots; the belly dusky white with smaller black spots.
