As this value is considerably below that of the lime pre- cipitate, we think it unnecessary to enter into further details regarding Mr. Manning's process, as all the observations made in reference to the former apply with double force to the latter, and we have no hesitation in expressing our opinion that there is no prospect of Mr. Manning's plan being carried out with profit. As a commercial speculation, therefore, the manufacture of the sewage residuum into a manure is by no means hopeful. It is scarcely necessary for us, however, to remark that the question of profit is a matter of comparatively little importance, and we should consider that we had sufficiently fulfilled the requirements of the Sanitary Committee if we could show that the disinfection of the Glasgow sewage could be carried out with a certain loss, the limits of which could be accurately defined. But we are not in a position to do this. The experi- ments we have made regarding the two processes already described have enabled us to determine the cost of mere pre- cipitation, and we should have no difficulty in furnishing similar data regarding any other process submitted to us should that appear desirable.
