Description

Collection of medical and other recipes largely in a single 18th century hand, comprising:

1. ff. 6-179 Receipts taken from the French translation of Sir Kenelm Digby's Choice and Experimented Receipts in Physick and Chirurgery: as also cordial and distilled waters and spirits, perfumes, and other curiosities, 1668, with index (ff. 182-193)

2. ff. 194-220 'Extraits des Mellieures [sic] Receptes recuillies [sic] par François Reinhard Albertini d'Ichtersheim,[b.c. 1692], Pannetier d'Hochfelden, pour differentes maladies, approuvées', with index (ff. 222-224).

With several later recipes in various 18th century hands inserted at the front of the volume and in the blanks between the above, three of which are ascribed to a certain 'Comte de Galiostro' [possibly the so-called Count Alessandro Cagliostro, 1743-1795, Italian adventurer and self-styled magician].

Biographical note

It seems that the major proportion of the text can have been penned no earlier than the 1740s, as one of the recipes is ascribed to 'Mr le Marechal de Saxe' [Maurice de Saxe, 1692-1750, appointed Marshal of France in 1743], f. 205. Whether François Reinhard Albertini d'Ichtersheim had any role in the compilation is unclear.
