About this work

Description

The poet neglects his wife and baby and spends money on a sword and a wig. Nemesis is shown in the form of the scolding milkmaid and the dog who steals the meat chop.

Studious he sate, with all his books around, sinking from thought to thought, a vast profound! Plunge'd for his sense, but found... Lettering continues:...no bottom there; then writ, and flounder'd on, in mere despair. Dunciad Book I line III Designed by W. Hogarth engraved by T. Cook Lettering within the print: the poet is writing "Poverty a poem", the "Grubstreet Journall" lies on the floor and the print on the wall reads "Pope's letters veni vidi vici 1735 the curl"
