Buffon, Georges Louis Leclerc de (1707-1788)

Les volcans (Fragment). With holograph corrections and additions by the Author. The contents of this fragment are incorporated in p. 244 col. 2 to p. 265 col. 1 of Vol. I of the 'Oeuvres complètes', Paris: P. Duménil. 1835. It originally formed the eleventh 'Cahier' of a set. Attached are two A.l.s. from a former owner of the MS., M. Boulire-Laubin, addressed to M. Trémizot, chef de bureau à la Préfecture de la Seine à Paris, dated 10/8, and 7/9, 1839. In the first letter the exchange of this MS. is offered for a copy of 'Isographie des hommes célèbres', of which Trémizot was a joint editor, and which the writer cannot afford to purchase for himself. The second letter shows that the offer was accepted. In the first letter the owner of the MS. states 'Je tiens ce précieux manuscrit d'un grand oncle de ma femme (Mme. Laubin de Montbart) dont M. de Buffon empruntait souvent la plume pour mettre au net ses brouillons'. The date 1776 occurs in a foot-note on p. 49.
