About this work

Description

Postcard advertising the indoor swimming pool at 151 rue de Dison,Verviers in Belgium, managed by J. Pirard. The front shows an illustration in a circle of a young woman wearing a white swimsuit, posing on the end of a diving board, the pool and poolside changing cubicles behind her, text on a pale turquoise background below her feet. She has her right arm raised, the hand in front of the glass roof panels, letting in a lot of natural light. The card has the October-March timetable on the back, though the year isn’t specified but the woman’s hairstyle would indicate the late 1920s.The pool boasted electric hair driers, pedicures and pools for ladies and gentlemen in a pleasant, comfortable environment but was closed on Sundays and public holidays. The card shows us that exercise and sport for the general public were becoming more commonplace and that there was more leisure time becoming available to people.
