    Hickisson9 s Improvements in Teats, Rings, Sfc. for Infants. our Lord One thousand eight hundred and seventy-three, in the thirty- seventh year of Her reign, did, for Herself, Her heirs and successors, give and grant unto me, the said James Ilickisson, Her special licence that I, the said James Ilickisson, my executors, administrators, and 5 assigns, or such others as I, the said James Ilickisson, my executors, administrators, and assigns, should at any time agree with, and no others, from time to time and at all times thereafter during the term therein expressed, should and lawfully might make, use, exercise, and vend, within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the 10 Channel Islands, and Isle of Man, an Invention for “ Improvements in Teats, Rings, and othePv Articles Sucked by Inpants,1” upon the condition (amongst others) that I, the said James Hickisson, my executors or administrators, by an instrument in writing under my, or their, or one of their hands and seals, should particularly describe and ascertain the 15 nature of the said Invention, and in what manner the same was to he performed, and cause the same to be filed in the Great Seal Patent Office within six calendar months next and immediately after the date of the said Letters Patent. NOW KNOW YE, that I, the said James Hickisson, do hereby declare 20 the nature of the said Invention, and in what manner the same is to he performed, to he particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement thereof, reference being had to the accompanying Drawings and to the letters and figures marked thereon, that is to say:— 25 The object of my Invention is to manufacture teats, rings, and other articles sucked by infants in such manner that the said teats, rings, or articles shall be more easy to the gums of infants than those at present in use, and shall assist them in cutting their teeth and in retaining the said teats or articles between their lips. ' ' * \ 30 The ordinary artificial teat is an ovoidal, bulging, or inflated nozzle or nipple of vulcanised caoutchouc or other material made smooth on the surface, and this construction has many disadvantages ; whereas according to my Invention the teat is formed with corrugations, striae, indentations, roughnesses, undulations, protuberances, bosses, 36 or unevennesses on the surface of the body of the teat.
