GBNERA L S UMMAR Y. The Weather.—The mean barometric pressure for .January was 30.09; mean temperature, 38 ; total precipitation, 4.89 inches, and prevailing direction of wind, Norihwent. Tlie temperature was 1.01 higher than the normal for the month, and the excess in precipitation was 1.69 inches. The number of clear and fair days was 23. .Mortality.—The total deaths were 780, as against 930 for the corresponding mouth of 1390. Of these, 601 were white and 179 colored, a death latc of 18.72 per tliousand for the former and 30.25 for the latter. 86 died from zymotic diseases, 104 from consumption and 112 from pncumouiii. 248, or 32 per cent, of the total deaths, were in children under five years of age. Infectious Diseases Reported.—During the month 186 cases of infectious diseases were reported, a decrease of 44 from December 1890. The greatest decrease occurred in diphtheria, croup and scarlet fever, and there was a decided increase in measles. Diphtheria, croup and scarlet fever fell from 104,22 and 73 cases, respectively, in December to 59,14 and 55 in January. IMeasles increased from 4 cases in December to 33 in January, and whooping cough from 23 to 24. Deaths in Hosiiitals.—deaths occurred in public institutions, of which eltten were reported as non-residents.
