About this work

Description

No. 15 in a series of 22 cards (they were put out one a year for 22 years). This card shows a family sitting around a table. The old man is reading from a bible, an old woman and two younger women are listening. There is a red curtain behind them. The original painting was by Thomas Faed. The card advertises Dr. Jayne's Tonic Vermifuge, Dr. D. Jayne's Expectorant (containing opium) and Dr. Jayne's Sanative Pills which were supposed to cure low spirits, indigestion, headache, constipation, dyspepsia, worms, St. Vitus dance, convulsions, colds, coughs, throat and lung troubles.
