About this work

Description

Black and white photograph of a girl, aged nine years, showing the appearances associated with continued rickets. The forehead is square and the epiphyses at the wrists notably enlarged. The erect posture emphasises the deformities of the lower extremities. The femora are bowed forwards and there is knock-knee. The right tibia presents a curve with its convexity inwards. The epiphyses at the ankle are enlarged and the right foot appears to have undergone a partial displacement outwards. The subject had never walked. Her twin sister had also suffered severely from rickets, for which an osteotomy had been performed.
