About this work

Description

Terry Pratchett, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's three years ago, presents a very moving documentary on assisted dying, which is not legal in this country. He discusses his own desires as to how his death might occur and visits people with terminal conditions who wish to have autonomy over their own death. He meets Peter Smedley, who has motor neuron disease and has contacted Dignitas, a Swiss assisted dying organisation. Belgian author Hugo Claus, who also had Alzheimer's, chose to have an assisted death and Pratchett goes to meet his widow, Veerla Claus-De Wit. She describes her husband's death. We meet ex-London taxi driver, Mick Gordelier, who has motor neuron disease but is ending his days in a hospice. Andrew is in his forties and has multiple sclerosis; he describes how difficult his life is and his two suicide attempts. They failed and so he has decided to go to Switzerland to end his life. Coincidentally he is going in the same week as Peter Smedley so Pratchett follows them there. He speaks to Ludwig A. Minelli, the Director of Dignitas where, for ten thousand pounds, you can end your life and have a funeral or have your body shipped back to your home country. Peter is interviewed by Erika Preisig, who tells him what the process is and gives him time to think about it. Andrew, meanwhile, decides to go ahead and Pratchett and his assistant, Rob, meet him to say goodbye and to speak to his mother about his decision. Peter's death is shown in detail.
