Thus, Nicholas Steensen, commonly calle Steno (1638-86), who discovered the parotid du< which bears his name, may be described as one of tf founders of geology and mineralogy. Most of h active life was spent in Florence, where he held th post of physician to two successive Grand Duke Of him Von Zittel wrote, in his History of Geolog that he was the first who sought to solve geologic problems by inductive reasoning. He threw mud light upon the formation and structure of crystal and, as Leonardo da Vinci had done a century an a half earlier, he maintained that fossils are the remair of actual animals and plants of former epochs. H ended his life as a Catholic bishop, and his ascet habits undermined his health. This brilliant Dane : entitled to rank among the great ones of scienc< as anatomist, geologist, mineralogist, and physiciar but his researches, so far in advance of h:, time, only received their due recognition afte much of his work had been done over again b later investigators. John Woodward (1665—1728), Professor of Med cine at Gresham College, and Fellow of this Colleg< also holds a distinguished place in the annals c geology. By his observations he acquired a mosi extensive knowledge of the structure of the earth crust, and had learnt much as to the superpositio of the various strata, but he propounded a fantastii hypothesis that the whole globe had been taken t pieces at Noah’s flood, and that from the resultin 4 promiscuous mass ’ the various strata had bee deposited in quick succession.
