W. Thornton Shiells may be considered the first professional medical artist in Britain, when a post was established for him at Central Middlesex Hospital. His earliest work appeared as illustrations to J. W. Thomson Walker's Surgical diseases and injuries of the genito urinary organs, in 1914. He also provided drawings for Operative cystoscopy by Conny Ryall, published in 1925
