About this work

Description

1880s (?) magazine insert advertising Pears' Soap ("For gentlemen, for ladies, for children, for babies") consisting of 2 illustrations. In the first a young, auburn-haired white boy is handing a cake of Pears' Soap to a worried young black boy in a metal hip bath. In the second one the happy black boy is looking at his reflection in a mirror held by the white boy, having discovered that he is now white from the neck downwards. The surrounding decorative border has small circular vignettes of a man, woman, girl and baby at each corner. Quotes and supposed signatures from Lillie Langtry and Adelina Patti are printed on the front, with praise from Sir Erasmus Wilson F.R.S. on the back.
