About this work
Description
The Metropolitan Hospital-Sunday Fund was established in 1873, when the Lord Mayor of London invited religious and hospital leaders to a meeting at Mansion House. Appalled by the effect of inadequate housing and poor sanitation on impoverished Londoners, they decided that on one day each year ('Hospital Sunday'), places of worship would hold a collection to raise funds for the sick and needy. This practice has continued to this day [2001] in the form of an annual appeal. (From the Fund's website)
