Esther Rantzen asks whether medical soaps and medical advice programmes are of more than entertainment value. Her guests include Mal Young (Head, BBC Drama Series), Dr. Paul Cundy (British Medical Association), Alex Mitchell (TV Editor, The Express), Dr. Chris Steele (GP, This Morning, ITV), television presenter Anne Diamond, Vivienne Parry (journalist and Tomorrow's World presenter), Dr. Heather Clarke, who has experience of emergency medicine, Dr. Raj Persaud (psychiatrist), people who were filmed when patients in real-life hospital series and actress Lisa Faulkner (Holby City). Discussion ranges over the way fictional operating theatre scenes are filmed, the accuracy of the clinical and surgical procedures portrayed in them, the relationship between journalism and medical science, whether life in a casualty department is as dramatic as portrayed in medical soaps, and whether viewers can learn anything useful from watching medical soaps and advice programmes.
