About this work

Description

In the text, the engraving after this drawing appears under a chapter entitled 'Remarkable singularities'. This "girl of sixteen, whose state scarcely exceeded two feet" was, according to Lavater, in a state of "consolidated infancy". While her forehead remained like a child's, her maturity "seems to have precipitated itself, if I may use the expression, into the under part of the face"
