Tongue: extrapulmonary Pneumocystis carinii infection

Extrapulmonary Pneumocystis carinii infection This is a high power view of a section of tongue from an adult with Pneumocystis carnii infection of the tongue. It shows numerous packed cysts of P. carinii, adjacent to muscle and surrounded by macrophages and lymphocytes. H&E stain. The patient was HIV positive.
