Biographical note

English bibliographer and antiquarian, a founder of the Early English Text Society and of the Index Society. Published the classic work on the indexing of books, How to Make an Index, 1902. He edited Samuel Pepys’s diary (10 vol., 189-1899) and wrote Samuel Pepys and the World He Lived In, 1880.
