In the centre is Amitāyus, the Bodhisattva who is propitiated in order to attain longevity. He holds a wishing tree in the form of a vase which contains an aśoka plant, a flower similar to a rose. He is seated in meditation posture and is surrounded by over thousand replicas of himself outlined in gold and black on a red field. This type of thanka is called serthang (gser thaṅ),or 'golden thanka'
