Grieving women outnumber apostles around the bed. One of the latter arranges a pillow behind the Virgin's head. A physician, dressed in contemporary costume including a fur mantle, takes her pulse. A Jewish high priest stands on the left of the bed, gravely looking down; a servant holds his tall sceptre
