    fered, men of superior talent and edu¬ cation have been induced to enter the medical department. Many such will, at present, be found among the regi¬ mental medical officers, that class, on whom the care of the army, in respect to health, must at all times chiefly devolve. That these arrangements, however subservient to the general good, would produce feelings of hostility and resent¬ ment in certain individuals, who either felt themselves disappointed, or fancied themselves aggrieved, it is natural to imagine. But private interest coming in competition with public benefit, it will not be questioned, though the de¬ cision may be the ground of complaint, which should be preferred. After my examination before your % Board, I had little expectation of being again brought forward: I certainly did not feel any ambition to obtrude myself on public notice ; but when character is attacked, silence becomes suspicious—it is even criminal.
