Description

Miscellaneous letters from French generals and others on administrative matters, 1795-1811. Mostly with typescript transcripts prepared by the Bibliotheca Lindesiana.

1. Petition from Pierre François Palloy to the National Convention for redress for an alleged fraud perpetrated against him. Paris, 22 vendémiaire, an IV [14 October 1795].

2. Letter from General Jacques Menou (1750-1810) to citizen Rivereau, an artillery commander, informing him of the award of compassionate leave for one of his men. Paris, 26 nivôse, an VII [14 January 1799].

3. Letter from General Bernard Louis Cattaneo (1769-1832) to a M. Sanné, a Parisian merchant, complaining about the delay in receiving supplies for the army at Boulogne. Ambleteuse [dép. Pas de Calais], 19 thermidor, an XIII [7 August 1804].

4. Letter from General Louis-Auguste Juvénal des Ursins, comte d'Harville (1749-1815) to the French Minister of War, covering the petition [not present] of a distressed war widow. Doue, dép. de Seine-et-Marne, 25 April 1806.

5. Letter from General Claude Ignace François Michaud (1751-1835) to the same, concerning command of forces in Holland. The Hague, 3 August 1806.

6. Letter from General Henri François Marie Charpentier (1769-1831) to the same, on arrangements for reinforcements for the army in Italy. Milan, 30 September 1806.

7. Order from General Deo-Gratias-Nicolas Godinot (1765-1811) to the 'commissaire ordonnateur en chef', relating to supplies for his army corps. Anklam [Germany], 12 January 1807.

8. Petition from General Pierre Nicolas Merle de Beaulieu (1738-1826) to 'les officiers généraux composans [sic] la commission près le Ministère de la Guerre', seeking an appointment or promotion to lieutenant-general. [Paris], n.d. [c.1807].

9. Request from a certain ?B. Mouthion to General Nicolas Antoine Sanson (1756-1824) for a copy of his map of Spain. Paris, 26 February 1808. Annotated by Sanson 'remis un exemplaire'.

10. Letter from General Pierre Margaron (1765-1824) to M. Degoy, 'commissaire aux sequestres à Lisbonne', to pay the pension due to a war widow. Lisbon, 2 May 1808.

11. Letter from General Jean Dembarrère (1747-1828) to M. de Fourcroy, 'directeur-général de l'instruction publique', in favour of the daughter of a M. Bizot-Coudray, colonel of engineers. Paris, 30 September 1809.

12. Petition from Gabrielle ?Menu, widow of Adrien Joseph Gravelle, an old soldier, to the French Minister of War, to continue to receive his pension. Sebourg, dép. Nord, 21 October 1809. Annotated by a General Daubigny with a recommendation to accede to the request.

13. Petition from Mme H. Patenat, a war widow, to 'Monseigneur' [presumably the French Minster of War], to continue to receive the pension awarded to her husband, Lt François Antoine Patenat. Antwerp, 2 August 1811. Subscribed with a statement of support by General Jean-Louis-François Fauconnet (1750-1819), commandant of Antwerp.

14. Letter from General Pierre Guillaume Gratien (1764-1814) to an unidentified correspondent on financial matters. Limburg, 15 February 1812.

15. Letter from General ?S. Faultrieu to Louis-Alexandre Berthier (1753-1815), French commander in Spain, covering a medical certificate [not present] in favour of his application for leave on grounds of ill-health. Madrid, 25 February 1811.

16. Letter from General Maurice Mathieu (1768-1833), governor of Barcelona, to the French Minister of War, on the shortage of army rations. Barcelona, 11 March 1811.

17. Report by General Jean Jacques Basilien Gassendi (1748-1828), to the French Minister of War, on a certain André Jean Auguste Le Begue, an old soldier seeking assistance. N.p., 11 July 1811.

Acquisition note

All purchased from Stevens, London, August 1930 (acc.90163), apart from document 2 which was purchased from James Tregaskis, London, in December 1927 (acc.68028).

Ownership note

The documents were formerly part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, the collection of Napoleonic memorabilia accumulated by Ludovic Lindsay (1847-1913), 26th Earl of Crawford, which was sold at Sotheby's in 1925.
