    Xill declared, in general, incurable. All that is intended to be advanced in the following treatife is to afcertain the caufes of the gout, and to palliate with fafety, and by judicious praftice, this horrid diflemper, under various fituations. The objeflions advanced concerning milk diet in all cafes, not to mention abftaining from wine and venCry, which few will agree to, are equally applicable to every other narrow projeft of diet, or any parti- cular medicine, regular or empirical. The adminiftratlon of diet, judlcioufly adapted to the habit of different patients, merits com- naendation ; but the dangerous prejudices, adop^d at different periods, of prefcribino- to diftrent and even oppofite conftitutiont exaaiy plan of cure or diet, originating perhaps, from a fmgle infancc of fuccefs, demands the fevereft cenfure. The mif- ortunes attending fuch infatuations, fuch emporary delufions, the alfliaed in the gout and chronic complaints have often had feveic reafons to lament, and may now onounce with juhice, as the poet Ovid ■ did
