About this work
Description
The hitherto unidentified writer may be an author or a calligrapher. He holds a sheet inscribed "Inspice et disce" ("Look on and learn", a quotation from the letters of the younger Seneca). Below, is the emblem: an anvil being struck by two hammers, observed by the eye of God, and with the motto "Crebro pulsata nitescit" (it shines from being struck frequently). In the background, a book-case. The inscription and the motto suggest an educationalist with an emphasis on repeated practice. The portrait and the emblem are surrounded by rococo frames
