Henri IV was born in the castle of Pau, his mother being Jeanne d'Albret, Queen of Navarre, and his father Antoine de Bourbon, King of Navarre

Lettering

Laffite delt. ; J.B. Pfitzer sculpt. Impression catalogued is proof before title lettering, bears inscription in pencil: "Birth of Henry IV"

Creator/production credits

"Laffite" in lettering presumed to be Louis Lafitte. One of his pupils was Achille Devéria, whose brother Eugène also painted a picture of the birth of Henri IV. The Dictionary of art (s.v. Devéria) calls it a "well-worn subject (made fashionable by the Restoration and usually portrayed in engravings or small-scale works)"
