About this work

Description

The companion piece to this engraving is called 'Humming all the trade is - or the modern alchymist'. The alchemist concerned is the Quaker William Allen (1770-1843) who was a philanthropist, chemist and druggist (DNB). He worked at Plough Court, subsquently the address of Allen & Hanbury's pharmaceutical manufactory. This print is a satire on the marriage of the old couple. "Newington Nunnery" refers to the Quaker school for girls at which Allen lectured
