And what became of you and your horse afterwards ? You may believe, sir, that if I liked the animal before, ray love for him was increased by this an hundred fold. Till the battle ended, however, I could not quit his back, and he took me through gallantly ; but no sooner were we ordered to dismount than to him all my attention was directed. I can't much blame the others for failing in that particular. No forage was issued out to us. The grass and green crops were all trodden into mud, and the men, more wearied than the horses, lay helpless in the midst of it. But I could not think of sleeping till I had at least done my best to fill Jack's belly. Away I went, there- fore, looking hither and thither, till at last under the lee of a ruined house close to the road-side, I came upon a detachment of the artillery, which had brought up with them both water and oats, and were baiting their horses.
