Description
The subject is unidentified. When the painting was sold at auction in London in 1923, the subject was identifed by the auction house as "Dr William Roxburgh of Ayrshire", presumably referring to the Ayrshire surgeon and botanist William Roxburgh (1751-1815), active in Scotland and India, but the present painting shows a man of a later generation
