About this work

Description

Fenchurch Street station in London was rebuilt in 1853 to cater for the extra services operated by the newly opened London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. The extended station was completed in February 1854 and was 300 ft long and 101 ft wide with a single span crescent truss roof, the subject of the present drawing. There is an engraving of the front of the rebuilt station in the Illustrated London News for 10 December 1853 (Jackson, op. cit.). The present drawing only shows the roof covering and girder details: there would have been another sheet to show elevations and the crescent trussing
