About this work

Description

The lean figure on the left is Sawney Scott who symbolises Scotland wearing tartan, a Scots cap and an oval badge of a crowned thistle and symbolises Scotland. John Bull, symbol of England, is the fat figure on the right wearing an ill-fitting wig, the number '45' (reference to the defeat of the 1745 rebellion by the Jacobites) on his coat and a tudor rose in a medallion. Their animosity toward each other reflects the political tension between the two nations
